The elders insist that the said land is a site of historical significance and is of traditional importance to the Agikuyu community, as it is where Mau Mau Uprising fighters were executed by colonial authorities in the early 1950s. Police were forced to lob teargas to disperse a crowd that joined the elders at the centre of Githunguri town in Kiambu County. The elders say they remain firm and will not be persuaded otherwise, insisting that the land’s historical connection should not be erased to pave way for an affordable housing project in the area.
