Civil society organisations under the Elimu Yetu Coalition have declared the escalating wave of school unrest in Kenya a national disaster, calling for the immediate reinstatement of half-term breaks and comprehensive reforms in the education sector.
Speaking during a stakeholders' forum at Royal Castle Hotel in Mombasa, Elimu Yetu Coalition National Coordinator Joseph Wasikhongo said recent dormitory fires, school closures, and disruptions to learning are symptoms of deeper systemic challenges, including overcrowding, poor learner welfare, mental health concerns, bullying, academic pressure, and weak grievance-handling systems.
