The 4th indigenous seed and food harvest fair has kicked off in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, where more than 100 exhibitors are showcasing the indigenous seeds aimed to celebrate Kenyans’ rich traditional foods and cultural practices. With this year’s theme collaborating to nurture indigenous seeds and food for better future focuses on promoting partnerships between stakeholders aimed to boost the accessibility and utilization of indigenous seeds and foods for sustainable food security in the country. Among the participants, including seed savers network, said that the seed fair provides a unique opportunity to sensitize the public and the policy makers on the need to conserve traditional seeds and at the same time address existing challenges in the sector. Speaking during the event, stakeholders have decried several challenges, including the sale of uncertified seeds, lack of government support and data systems of indigenous seeds. The two-day event is organized by the Inter-sectoral Forum on Agro biodiversity and Agro ecology (ISFAA) and Lthe aikipia County government.
