Kenya's representatives in continental football, Gor Mahia and Tusker FC, have every reason to smile after receiving clearance from the First Instance Body (FIB), the independent FKF body mandated to issue club licences. FIB Chairman Sam Karanja says the club licensing process has been tedious, but Kenya Premier League clubs have successfully navigated the system and secured approval. Clubs must obtain licences to compete in the league and continental championships.
Before the start of every season, the FIB sends the licensing framework to all clubs with the required guidelines. The licensing system is online, allowing clubs to upload all the necessary documents for review. The biggest challenge has been overdue payments, but clubs have negotiated payment plans to meet the financial deadline of March 31. Club licensing also keeps clubs updated on new trends and requirements in modern football. Kenyan clubs continue to face infrastructure challenges, as many do not own training grounds and stadiums required under the licensing regulations. The start of the new season will also be challenging for Nairobi-based clubs, with Kasarani and Nyayo stadiums closed for renovation ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
