The government has announced plans to expand the acreage under cultivation at the Galana Kulalu Irrigation Scheme To 3,200 acres under the public private partnership program by the end of year, citing success in the 1,500 acre pilot project, that is projected to yield over 4 million kilograms of maize. Water Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa who flagged off the harvesting of ready maize in 330 acres of the scheme, says once a project achieves full potential, the government will save upwards of Ksh.400 billion that goes to food importation annually. Eventually, the government says it intends to put 20,000 acres of land at the scheme under irrigation, creating 2,000 jobs for the residents of Kilifi and tana river counties where it extends.
