UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing Israel–Iran conflict, as well as urgent de-escalation of wider hostilities involving the United States, warning that continued fighting risks further destabilising global security.
He also urged the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, saying its continued disruption is placing severe strain on the global economy, with critical commodities such as fuel and fertiliser facing rising pressure and supply uncertainties.
Speaking during a press conference in Nairobi, Guterres further called for an end to the conflicts in Sudan and South Sudan, noting that the violence continues to claim lives and displace thousands of civilians. He reiterated that lasting peace can only be achieved through peaceful means, emphasising the need for genuine dialogue, negotiation, and sustained diplomatic engagement.
