Human rights defenders in Nairobi are threatening to take to the streets next Monday to demand the release of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye. Besigye was abducted in Nairobi on November 16, 2024, and later resurfaced in Uganda, where he was arraigned before a military court. His case was subsequently transferred to a civilian court, where he faces charges of treason and misprision of treason.
The group, which has condemned Besigye’s reported abduction on Kenyan soil, is also raising concerns over what it describes as political repression in the East African region and is calling on authorities to provide answers over the circumstances surrounding his transfer to Uganda.
