Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has halted the issuance of sugar import licences, saying the country has sufficient stocks to meet local demand. The directive comes after farmers and a section of sugar millers raised concerns over an influx of cheap imports affecting the sale of locally produced sugar. The ministry has also committed to clear farmers' arrears ahead of the Kenya Sugar Board elections scheduled for September 5.
