The Lake basin development authority is setting up a fish feed processing plant, complementing the ultra-modern hatchery commissioned in 2025. Speaking in Kisumu, LBDA managing director Wyclife Ochiaga said the feeds will be based on by-products from rice, lowering the cost of feeds incurred by aquaculture farmers. Currently, fish feeds constitute up to 70% of the total production cost, leading to the underutilization of ponds and other inland sources for fish farming. In 2024, Kenya imported 9960 tons of fish, with the Kenya fisheries service looking to close the importation gap by the end of 2026.
