MANDERA SEVERE DROUGHT
The drought situation in Mandera County remains critical, with the region officially classified under the alarm drought phase as conditions continue to deteriorate following successive seasons of poor and uneven rainfall. More than 335,000 residents are now in need of urgent humanitarian assistance after water sources dried up, pasture failure and household food and nutrition security become weak. Livestock the backbone of Mandera’s economy are trekking longer distances in search of water and pasture, leading to poor body condition, reduced milk production, and declining household incomes. Mandera County Governor, Mohamed khalif while chairing a Disaster Risk Management Steering Group meeting, urged partners and local NGOs to accelerate humanitarian response efforts across all sub-counties to help avert the worsening drought crisis.
