    Eighty years ago, on July 16, 1945, scientists detonated the world’s first nuclear device, in a desert in the US state of New Mexico. The test paved the way for an action, three weeks later, that caused death and destruction on an unprecedented scale: the drop of two atom bombs by the US in the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. More than 200,000 people were killed in the attacks. Since then, the world changed forever, marking the start of the global nuclear arms race.
