Over 2 million people across 23 counties are facing hunger, with 750,000 children malnourished following the ongoing severe drought, driven by consecutive seasons of failed or below average rainfall. According to the World Health Organisation, the number is projected to rise as food insecurity worsens. In a bid to mitigate the impacts of drought, the government has set aside 6 billion shillings to purchase water, food and non-food items and distribute them to the affected families.
