The State of Health Care in Kiambu County is once again in the spotlight, after the Ministry of Health redeployed more than 700 medical interns to other counties, following months of differences pitting them and the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union, KMPDU, and the county government. While the County Government insists hospital operations are running smoothly, the union has raised alarm over maternal deaths and service gaps, urging patients to seek care elsewhere.
According to Central Region KMPDU officials, since May, more than 100 Maternal and child health-related deaths have been recorded in Kiambu, five of them mothers who allegedly died due to delayed interventions. The county, however, has dismissed the maternal death figures as exaggerated.
