Pope Leo the Fourteenth has used his first Christmas message to make a strong call for peace, highlighting the suffering of civilians caught up in global conflicts, particularly in Africa, Europe and the Middle East. Delivering the traditional Urbi et Orbi blessing from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica on Christmas Day, the first U.S.-born pontiff called on the world to show compassion to those affected by war, displacement and hardship.
