The death of former prime minister Raila Odinga has stirred memories of his childhood years in Jerusalem estate a modest neighborhood in Nairobi’s Eastlands, where his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, lived before independence. Residents fondly recall the young Raila growing up in the area popularly known as “kwa Odinga,” a vibrant community that shared in the Odinga family’s early years. Jaramogi, who would later become Kenya’s first vice president, eventually moved his family to the more affluent Lavington estate in the 1960s as his political star rose.
