Siaya County has undertaken a major ecosystem restoration initiative involving the planting of 35,000 bamboo seedlings across key riverine areas along the Nzoia and Yala basins. The four-day exercise is part of Kenya’s broader 15 billion tree national initiative aimed at combating climate change, restoring degraded landscapes, and reducing seasonal flooding. Speaking at Nyadorera along River Nzoia, Wildlife Research and Training Institute (WRTI) Director and CEO Dr. Patrick Omondi said bamboo was selected for its ability to strengthen riverbanks, reduce soil erosion, and help prevent dyke breaches that have long affected the region during heavy rains.
