Tanzania deploys security forces to prevent anniversary protests

Police and soldiers were deployed in force in Tanzania’s commercial hub, Dar es Salaam, on Tuesday to prevent protests planned by activists condemning the violent suppression of demonstrations following October’s elections. The government warned that any gatherings on December 9, 2025—the anniversary of mainland Tanzania’s independence—would be treated as an attempted coup and urged citizens to remain at home.
