UN expands Nairobi hub with $340m project

The United Nations is ramping up its investment in Nairobi, with President William Ruto and UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Tuesday officiating the groundbreaking of a new UN assembly hall and the inauguration of UN office buildings in Gigiri, Nairobi. The two leaders said the $340 million project symbolises Kenya’s and the Global South’s crucial role in the United Nations system. Even as concerns grow over possible inflationary pressure from the planned relocation of more than 2,000 UN staff from New York to Kenya, Guterres insists the expansion will unlock major economic and investment opportunities for the country.
