US shifts focus to trade and investment in Africa

    The United States says it is stepping up efforts to strengthen commercial diplomacy with Africa, positioning trade, investment and innovation at the centre of its engagement as it seeks to tap into the continent's growing purchasing power. According to Sarah Troutman, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of African Affairs, Africa will be home to more than 2.5 billion people by 2050, with a purchasing power exceeding 16 trillion dollars. She says these projections have prompted a review of the US strategy to increase exports to the continent. Jimmy Mbogoh has more.
