The public transport sector in Kenya is still an uncomfortable space for women even with the huge difference in economic growth and sustainable development it has brought. According to Flone initiative, women constitute 7% of the labor force in the public transportation sector in Kenya. The majority of these work as conductors and 83% of them are the sole breadwinners of their respective families. To show how the sector has really transformed in bridging the gender gap, a number of them are slowly joining the matatu industry. In Machakos, women take full charge of the Maruti and tuk-tuk businesses.
