Kundi hilo, moja ya makundi ya wanamgambo yanayotekeleza mauaji mabaya katika eneo hilo lenye mzozo, lilitangaza kuwa chini ya uongozi wa kundi la Islamic State mwaka wa 2019. “Baada ya mauaji ya ADF huko Matembo, walitujia hapa Sayo, na kutuacha tukiomboleza vifo vya watu watano,” alisema mkuu wa eneo hilo Antoine Kambale. Afisa wa Beni, Makofu Bukuku aliiambia AFP kwamba idadi ya vifo huko Sayo inaweza kuongezeka, kwa sababu waasi bado wapo katika eneo hilo.
