10 arrested as police declare Saba Saba protests unlawful

Police have arrested 10 people in Nairobi's Central Business District for taking part in the Saba Saba protests. Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja said Tuesday's demonstrations were unlawful, arguing that police had not received the legally required notice before the protests. However, civil rights groups condemned the arrests, accusing police of violating citizens' constitutional right to peaceful assembly. The activists said they had planned to present a petition to Parliament seeking compensation for victims of last year's Saba Saba protests. Ben Kirui reports
