4 newborns die every hour in Kenya

Kenya is losing up to four newborns every hour, translating to about 92 deaths each day. The latest statistics indicate that more than 66 percent of these deaths occur among children under the age of five, many linked to systemic failures across the continuum of care, from home settings to health facilities. Medical experts attending the international maternal, newborn, and child health conference here in Nairobi say a majority of these deaths are preventable, calling for strengthened systems at every level of care.
