Ancient Chinese in Xinjiang Province developed an underground water network in arid land that for thousands of years was used for irrigation and domestic use. This greatest engineering in a desert saw communities joining hands to create similar underground water channels to draw water from melted ice and snow from the mountains. Beatrice Gatonye was in Xinjiang, and she tells us how this olden underground engineering turned dry land into a major agricultural hub.
