Controller of Budget flags concerns over rising debt and repayment risks

The controller of budget is tonight painting a debt crisis where 61 per cent of the country's external debt, amounting to 3.3 trillion shillings, is due for repayment within one year. Appearing before the national assembly debt and privatisation committee, Margaret Nyakango said the pressure exerted by the high debt servicing obligations has been constraining fiscal space, limiting the government's ability to allocate adequate resources for development and social programmes such as education and health.
