Trade sector players operating in the East African market are now calling for greater cross-border policy alignment to address payment hurdles and improve the ease of doing business across the region. Speaking in Nairobi, the players noted that while trade continues to deliver double-digit growth to regional economies, payment delays and transactional bottlenecks are limiting full access to the estimated 300-million-people market. They also flagged non-tariff barriers as a major obstacle, saying that even as tariffs ease, these hidden restrictions continue to weigh down trade.
