Journalists recount trauma from Malala arrest standoff during Butere Girls play saga

Now to the continuing series, my year by Citizen Tv journalists. The events sorrounding the preparations by Butere girls drama students for a controversial play “echoes of war” may have caught the attention of the country. But in its wake, it left scars to journalists covering those events in Nakuru. In april 2025 journalists in their line of duty were caught in the standoff between playwright and former senator Cleophas Malala and police officers deployed to arrest him. The news men and women were assaulted and teargassed as senator Malala attempted to access Kirobon girls high school where Butere girls cast were hosted a day before their scheduled performance.
