Kakamega County shuts Shiveye gold mine after 3 fatalities

The Kakamega County Government has ordered the immediate closure of the Shiveye gold mine following a deadly collapse that claimed the lives of three miners. During a visit to the site, Kakamega Deputy Governor Ayub Savula said the shutdown will pave the way for a comprehensive geological safety review. Savula said the county will deploy geologists to examine the soil structure, topography and other scientific indicators of safety before determining whether mining operations can resume.
