Kenya has become the first country in the world to join a major global program aimed at saving newborn lives. The five-year “Healthy Birth Initiative,” worth KSh 11 billion, will focus on 12 counties responsible for over half of all newborn deaths. As Emily Chebet reports, despite progress in maternal health, Kenya still loses about 92 newborns every day, a figure health officials say is largely preventable. The initiative will use proven solutions to reduce newborn mortality and help the country move closer to its Sustainable Development Goals.
