The Kisumu High Court has awarded compensation to 28 victims of police brutality, who were either killed or injured during the 2023 Okoa Uchumi protests. In a landmark judgement issued Wednesday, Justice Alfred Mabeya awarded a total of 38.6 million shillings in compensation, after he found clear violation of the Constitution regarding the right to life as well as security of the person. Justice Mabeya invoked the principle of command responsibility, giving the National Police Service a 90-day timeframe to develop regulations governing the use of firearms in maintaining public order.
