The government has started discussions to consider implementation of the open skies policy.

Speaking in Mombasa, the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism, Penina Malonza said the talks have already kicked off to ensure the tourism hubs attract more international airlines. "We are in progress and I can say the discussion has begun. It will be a win-win discussion and an exciting one," she said.

The coast hoteliers and leaders were pegging hopes on open skies policy for tourism sector revival. The tourism stakeholders from the coast region were pushing for the implementation of the open skies policy to enable international flights to land directly in Mombasa. Open skies policy means liberalization and ease of access and rules of use of national airports for foreign airlines.
