More than eight in every 10 Kenyans are unable to access justice through the country's courts, according to Court of Appeal Judge Justice Prof. Joel Ngugi. Speaking at the graduation of Certified Professional Mediators in Mombasa, Justice Ngugi said only 17 percent of Kenyans access justice through the formal court system, making alternative dispute resolution mechanisms such as mediation essential.
He described mediation as part of a global movement to expand access to justice, arguing that justice should not be the exclusive domain of lawyers and judges. The event, organized by Suluhu Mediation Centre in partnership with Vocal Africa, highlighted the growing role of trained mediators in resolving disputes, promoting peace, and preventing conflicts before they reach the courts.
