Grand masters shook off early upsets dominating the 31st edition of Kenya open chess championship

    Another grand master Eltaj Safarli of Azerbaijan finished second with 8 points. 17 year-old American-Indian I.m Samant adity was a surprise third place finisher with 7.5 points. Defending champion Harold Wanyama from Uganda finished a distant fifth. Women grand master Josephine Heinemanne was the best in the women's competition with nine points out of a possible nine after she won all her matches. 2018 and 2019 champion Kenya’s Joyce Ndirangu finished fifth. The event attracted a record 445 players from 22 countries.
