Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel will immediately pursue cooperation with Somaliland in areas such as agriculture, health, technology and the economy. Somalia has however strongly condemned the move, calling it an unlawful violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Egypt, alongside Somalia, Turkey and Djibouti, also criticised Israel’s decision, warning it could threaten regional stability. The African Union rejected any recognition of Somaliland, reaffirming its support for Somalia’s unity. Somaliland has operated as a self-governing region since 1991 but has not previously been recognised by any country.
