The Kajiado County Government has honoured three legendary Maa elders: Francis Ole Legis, Chief Lenku Ole Mpaa, and Lesinko Ole Nkaitole, for their historic role in wildlife conservation and in advocating for the handover of Amboseli National Park to local communities, a journey that began in the 1970s. The elders, now deceased, are credited with petitioning the national government to allow local communities to manage Amboseli, citing conservation, community rights, and sustainable coexistence with wildlife. Their long-standing efforts bore fruit two months ago, when President William Ruto officially transferred the management of Amboseli National Park to Kajiado County, under a 50:50 revenue-sharing agreement with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).
