Ogoniland: 30 years on

Thirty years on from the trial and execution of Nigerian environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight of his colleagues – known as the Ogoni 9 – the Ogoni community is still bitterly split over who was to blame for the killings of four Ogoni chiefs that led to the trial in 1995. The families of the Ogoni 9 say the charges against the activists were an attempt to silence them over their stance on the environmental damage caused by oil giant Shell in the Niger Delta. As for the families of the four murdered chiefs, they say they still do not have closure over their deaths.
