Parliament cuts fuel VAT as prices remain high despite relief plan

Tonight, the national assembly has amended the value-added tax act, enacting into law the reduction of VAT on fuel from 16 per cent to 8 per cent. In a hurried consideration of the amendment, the bill seeks to regularize. President William Ruto’s directive on Wednesday reduced fuel prices by nine shillings for super petrol and ten shillings for diesel. During the hour-long debate, members of parliament allied with the opposition challenged the government to cut taxes further, saying high fuel prices would adversely affect the cost of living.
