President William Ruto has reaffirmed his confidence in devolution to transform Kenya’s health sector, as the government moves to expand specialised healthcare services through the construction of 10 new hospitals across the country.The facilities will be be established in Nairobi, Bomet, Kwale, Mombasa, Garissa, Kisumu, Embu, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu and West Pokot and are expected to improve access to quality maternal and child healthcare while strengthening existing county health systems. Among the planned facilities is the 250-bed Chebunyo Amsons Mother and Child Hospital in Uasin Gishu County, which will be modelled on the Mother and Baby Hospital at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, The Kenya’s first dedicated theatre for newborn babies alongside a post-caesarean ward for mothers requiring specialised care after delivery.
President Ruto said the planned investments build on gains already made by county governments since the advent of devolution, including the expansion and equipping of health facilities, recruitment of more healthcare workers and improved availability of medicines and essential medical supplies. He has urged Kenyans and other stakeholders to support counties in delivering their health mandate, saying continued collaboration will be critical in improving access to quality and specialised healthcare.
