Tension is brewing between Kisumu teachers affiliated to the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers-KUPPET, and a section of members of Parliament in the lakeside county. The teachers, led by their branch Executive Secretary George Osura and chairperson Robert Ogaja, are accusing Kisumu East and Nyando MPs of repeatedly scolding teachers, thereby affecting their work morale. They are specifically aggrieved by recent remarks by the Kisumu East legislator Shakeel Shabbir, where the MP had accused some teachers of immorality and mishandling learners. The legislator, however, says the remarks were taken out of context. The teachers have threatened to take to the streets on Friday next week if the MP does not recant the remarks.
