Cecilia Wanjiku remembered as hero in Utumishi fire tragedy

The family of 17-year-old Cecilia Wanjiku, one of 16 girls who perished in the Utumishi Girls Academy fire tragedy on Wednesday night, has confirmed their worst fears after positively identifying their daughter’s body at the Naivasha Sub-County Hospital mortuary on Saturday afternoon. To the more than 800 students at the school, however, Cecilia is being remembered as a hero. She is said to have remained behind during the frantic rush to safety, ensuring that those in the Meline Waithera Dormitory were able to escape.
