Former Chief Justices Willy Mutunga and David Maraga are at the centre of a diplomatic row with Tanzania. Mutunga, along with activists Hanifa Adan and Hussein Khalid, was detained and deported under unclear circumstances. At the same time, Maraga was allowed entry and observed a key court case involving opposition leader Tundu Lissu. The Kenyan government insists diplomatic ties remain strong.
