Former councillors of the defunct Homa Bay County Municipal Council have joined a national movement demanding government action on pension payments and a one-off honorarium for retired civic leaders. The group wants the National Assembly to enact a law creating a framework for the National Treasury to disburse retirement benefits as recommended by the Interagency Task Force Committee. The proposal recommends that each former councillor receive a one-off payment of 1.5 million shillings and a monthly stipend of 30,000 shillings. Former Councillors Forum Secretary-General George Omondi Ondiek said councillors, who were elected through the same process as Members of Parliament, Governors, and Presidents, deserve similar recognition and benefits.
